Crawlability and indexability
Before a page can rank, a search engine has to be able to find it (crawlability) and decide it's worth adding to its index (indexability). Broken internal links, an incomplete or incorrect XML sitemap, misconfigured robots.txt rules, or accidental 'noindex' tags can all quietly prevent pages from ever being considered for ranking — regardless of how good the content is.
Site architecture
How a site's pages are organized and linked affects both how search engines understand topical relationships and how easily users can navigate. A flat, logical structure where important pages are a few clicks from the homepage generally performs better than a deep, disorganized hierarchy.
Core Web Vitals and page speed
Core Web Vitals measure real-world loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability. They're a confirmed ranking factor, but more importantly, they directly affect whether visitors stay on a page or leave — a slow or visually unstable page loses visitors before it has a chance to convert them.
Canonicalization and duplicate content
When the same or similar content is accessible at multiple URLs, canonical tags tell search engines which version is authoritative. Without them, ranking signals get split across duplicate pages instead of consolidating on one — weakening all of them.
HTTPS, redirects, and mobile SEO
HTTPS is a baseline expectation now, not a differentiator. Redirect chains slow down crawling and dilute link equity, so they should be cleaned up rather than stacked. And with mobile-first indexing, the mobile version of a site is what search engines primarily evaluate — so mobile usability issues carry more weight than they used to.
